The Next Gen Catalog was an opportunity for us to design a blue sky of the current catalog UI based off of user feedback and current findings, learnings, and shopping experiences across the web.
Company: IBM
Role: Senior UX & Visual Designer
Timespan: December 2017 - January 2018
Team Location: USA // England
Team Make-up
1 Design Manager | 1 UX & Visual Designer | 1 Visual Designer
Problem Statement:
It had been close to a year since the original catalog workshop where the foundations of the interface was created. Our offering manager tasked us to "Make Data Sexy" and explore what the catalog could be if we had no design guide, development or timeline restraints in order for us to prioritize the functionality and timelines for the year ahead of us.
The existing catalog UI.
We user tested the catalog with 12 beta customers from 5 different areas.
The Research
Pain point 1:
Finding assets is difficult
Pain point 2:
Difficult to recognized different asset types
Pain point 3:
Need to understand whether the asset is of quality or not
We synthesized all of the user quotes pulled from the transcripts to find pain points that needed to be addressed.
Ideation Workshops
Understanding the competitive landscape
Prioritizing big ideas & concept sketching
Breakdown concepts into individual features
Generation of Design Principles
